The Secrets of the Kingdom

And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

When looking at this passage of scripture it has to be read in the context of all parables of the Kingdom taught by Jesus until this phrase used by Jesus. But also we need to see the secrets of the Kingdom in the light of the early church teaching/understanding of the mystery “Christ in us“.

the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:26-27‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The parables of the Kingdom especially in Matthew 13, I will handle one by one later on at this blog, but now first focus about the Kingdom Secret(s).

The Son of man

Have you noticed that Jesus never talked of himself as Messiah. Instead he used the phrase from the book of Daniel, the Son of Man.

””I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

‭‭Daniel‬ ‭7:13-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬

And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’”

‭‭Daniel‬ ‭7:27‬ ‭ESV‬

”And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

‭‭John‬ ‭12:23‬ ‭ESV‬‬

”Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16:28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus saw himself fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 7. The Son of man coming in his Kingdom. He did not talk of himself in the context of, Saviour, King or Messiah. Instead simply Son of Man.

The phrase “Son of man” is not used after the resurrection, it is then replaced with Messiah, Lord or Savior.

The strategy from heaven was a secret/mystery.

All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.“”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭13:34-35‬ ‭ESV‬‬

the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:26‬ ‭ESV‬‬

”making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:9-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭16:25‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This secret or mystery, Christ In us was hidden so even Satan did not know what it meant.

The Devil knew that Jesus the King should come back, he read the bible, but he did not understand in what way.

The Jews awaited a political leader that should save them from the occupation.

And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

It was a pressure on Jesus to be the political leader that should save the Jews out from the hands of the dogs (Romans).

This could be the reason Jude betrayed Jesus when he found out he is not the Political liberator they where waiting for?

And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!””

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭21:9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!””

‭‭Mark‬ ‭11:9-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

This is the reason the people shouted “Hosanna” one day and “Crucify” the next when they later understood Jesus was not the man for the job.

Messiah and the Kingdom goes together

The hebrew word Messiah means “The anointed” and in greek it is translated Christ.

Messiah, can only be seen in the context of a Kingdom. Anointed King, like King David was anointed by Samuel.

Jesus was only Messiah, after the resurrection when the Keys to life and death was taken back.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

But before the Cross Jesus was tempted by Satan, to get the lost authority over all Kingdoms on earth from Satan. Temptation is real, so nothing abstract for Jesus. Satan knew Jesus was going to come back, but he never grasped how.

And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.””

‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:5-7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So before the cross it belonged to Satan, due to the fall of Adam, that gave his authority away when falling in sin. But after the resurrection, Jesus clearly states, it has been given to me.

As the father sent me, so I send you

The Old Testament talked about a Messiah that should come like a “son of man” and that then the Kingdom should stay forever.

Chapter 7 is coming back again to a Kingdom, greater than any other, like Nebukanessars dream in chapter 2.

And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,”

‭‭Daniel‬ ‭2:44‬ ‭ESV‬‬‬‬

So when Jesus was talking of him leaving, it did not fit to the expectations of the Old Testament Messiah.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

‭‭John‬ ‭16:7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Key here is that Jesus went away, so the Holy Ghost could come over not only Jesus of Nazareth, but now on a global level, to everyone that becomes a true disciple. Jesus was no longer limited to Jerusalem, he became omnipresent because of us.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.””

‭‭John‬ ‭20:21-23‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus gives away the mandate to his disciples.

””Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

‭‭John‬ ‭14:12-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus Messiah, did not go away to leave his Kingdom, instead he moved into every believer, giving authority, skills and anointing to us to extend the Kingdom on earth.

””Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭12:32‬ ‭ESV‬‬

the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:26-27‬ ‭ESV‬‬

To sum this all up! The secret was not a new King in Israel, but Messiah as King in the Kingdom within us.
