When trying to understand the meaning of life, and what is it all about we have to go back to where it all started, the garden of Eden.
In the book of Genesis 1 we read – 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth”. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth”.
To understand an organisations task, vision or what drives them you need to find out their Mission statement.
The “Economist” outline of their Missions Statement, reads: A mission statement is an organisation’s vision translated into written form. It makes concrete (for all to see and read) a leader’s view of the direction and purpose of an organisation.
– Translated to written form
– Makes concrete a leaders direction and purpose
Steve Jobs original Mission Statement was: “To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind.”
Sums up pretty well what he and Apple achieved, right?
Everywhere you are in the world today, everyone has some kind of relation to a smart phone and an Iphone in particular.
The Vision and Missions Statement of Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA is: Vår vision är ”att skapa en bättre vardag för de många människorna”. Translated to English: Our Vision is “to create a better living for the many people”.
With these examples in mind lets go back to Gods Missions Statement with Human Kind in Gen 1:26-27, we understand it was not just fancy wording by God, but it was really the ethos of God, a concrete direction and purpose in written form for human kind.
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness”.
– Our – says something of Team spirit and not Hierarchy
– Likeness – look like God, act like God, behave like God. But with the big difference God being the creator and us the creation.
“let them have dominion…over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth”
– Giving the mandate and authority, not over each other but over every living creature not being a human being.
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion… every living thing that moves on the earth.”
– Giving humans their mission.
Gods intention was for mankind to reflect God on earth as God is in heaven. – Bring Heaven to earth. Heard that before?
9Father in heaven hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. – Matthew 6
So when Jesus Messiah finally appears on the streets on Jerusalem, his agenda is definitely not to come up with a new religion called Christianity. By the way, Christianity was a nickname from the pagans, just saying…he does not even preach Church but Kingdom.
43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” – Luke 4
The Church has through the history focused on the purpose of Christ to be the atonement, even though that is not wrong, Jesus himself relates his purpose to preach the Kingdom and not mainly atonement. (I will elaborate this more in a coming blogg.)
The word Jesus is using for Kingdom is basileía, defined as kingdom, sovereignty, royal power…
…does it not ring a bell, where did we read of such a mandate?
Yes in Genesis 1:26.
First book of the bible talks about it and last book talks about it.
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Revelation 5
To reign on earth!
